Storyline:
Gladiator is a historical Oscar won epic movie directed by Ridley Scott released in 2000. It stars Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Ralf Möller, Oliver Reed, Djimon Hounsou, Derek Jacobi, John Shrapnel and Richard Harris.
Maximus is a most powerful Roman general, loved by the people and the aging Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Before his death, the Emperor chooses Maximus to be his heir over his own son, Commodus, and a control struggle leaves Maximus and his family fated to death. The powerful general is powerless to save his family, and his loss of will allows him to get captured and put into the Gladiator games until he dies. The only wish that fuels him now is the chance to rise to the top so that he will be able to look into the eyes of the man who will feel his revenge.

Gladiator was nominated in 36 individual ceremonies, including the 73rd Academy Awards, the BAFTA Awards, and the Golden Globe Awards. Of 119 award nominations, the film won 48 prizes.
The Gladiator won five Academy Awards and was nominated for an additional seven, including Best Supporting Actor for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Director for Ridley Scott. There was controversy[citation needed] over the film's nomination for Best Original Music Score. The award was officially nominated only to Hans Zimmer, and not to Lisa Gerrard due to Academy rules. However, the pair did win the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score as co-composers.
